Energy Efficient Tax Credit

Federal tax credits are available for home builders. The Energy Policy act of 2005 has been updated various times and currently expires on December 31, 2016. The IRS grants tax credits of up to $2,000 to home builders for each new energy efficient home.

Requirements For Tax Credit

New homes must meet the following criteria to qualify for the tax credit

  1. Be located in the United States,
  2. Must be substantially completed by December 31, 2016
  3. Sold or leased to another person after December 2005 and before 2017
  4. Must be certified to meet the energy efficiency requirements. Refer to (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8908.pdf)

Who Qualifies For The Tax Credit

The credit is made available only for the eligible contractor. According to the IRS “An eligible contractor is the person that constructed a home. A person must own and have a basis in the qualified home during its construction to qualify as an eligible contractor with respect to the home.”
